Mean Girls is a 2004 American teen comedy film directed by Mark Waters. A 16 year old girl name Cady Heron, was raised in Africa and was home-schooled. At 16, she moved to America and enters a public high school for the first time. She only lived her life for 15 years with her parents and the wilderness. She made 2 new friends called Damian and Janis. They were viewed as ‘not popular’. Later on, Cady met the ‘plastics’ these were the 3 ‘popular’ girls. They were presented as pretty and crude. These were called Regina, Gretchen and Karen. They instantly let Cady join their group which is an unusual thing for the plastics to do. Her other 2 friends told Cady to remain friends with the plastics so they can find out their darkest secrets. Unfortunately, Cady falls for Regina’s ex-boyfriend, Aaron. Regina then finds out and seeks revenge on Cady by taking Aaron back. Cady finds out which turns into a plan to destroy Regina.
As Cady spends so much time with the plastic, she then begins to become one. During the process of destroying Regina, the 3 plot out different things to try. For example Cady gave Regina a Bar stating it will help her stay slim when in fact it made her put weight on. They tried endless things. Regina responds by spreading the whole contents of the burn book. The teachers make the students feel guilty about being hurtful to other people. Regina also gets hit by a bus but people stated Cady pushed her in front of it. In the end, Cady tries to fix everything and apologizes and states everyone should be happy with who they are.
I find the film funny and relatable which is why it attracts me and many other young females. “One time she punched me in the face... it was awesome”. I found this quote funny because it is about the popular punching a regular student and she didn’t mind because it was Regina. It is unusual to find being punched ‘awesome’. “She thinks she does gonna have a party and not invite me? Who does she think she is?” This can be relatable to many young people as there are parties and people who haven’t been invited would usually say something along the lines like that. This quote can be seen as how people speak about others behind there back which is can also be relatable to some people. Cady says “Regina seems…sweet!” Janis replies “Regina George is not sweet! She’s a scum-sucking road wh**e, she ruined my life!” The audience can find this funny as they can relate to speaking in that way.
I believe this film attracts a female audience due to all the conventions used such as setting. The majority of this film is set in a school which most of the audience can relate to the issues because they would still be in school. Fashion is also a feminine characteristic. Most girls love clothes and care about their appearence and this is shown throughout this film.
